Main Sewer Line Cleaning details
When a drain keeps clogging no matter how often it is snaked, the pipe walls are usually coated. Fullerton hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour New Jersey drain and sewer lines clean from wall to wall.
Quick answer: Jetting is better when the pipe walls are coated with grease, soap, scale or sludge, or when a line keeps clogging soon after snaking. Snaking is better for breaking through thick root masses or solid objects. Many jobs use both: a cable opens the line, then jetting scrubs the walls clean so the drain stays clear longer.
Hydro jetting, also called water jetting, cleans pipes with a focused stream of high pressure water. A specialized hose and nozzle travel through the line, firing jets backward and sometimes forward. The backward jets pull the hose along and scour the full inside surface of the pipe, flushing grease, sludge, soap, scale and fine roots downstream and out. A cable machine is excellent for breaking through a clog, but it can leave buildup clinging to the walls. Jetting removes that coating. For lines that clog again weeks after they are snaked, jetting is often the answer that finally sticks.
Choosing between jetting and cabling depends on the pipe and the problem. Cabling is the better first move for thick root masses, hard objects and some older or fragile pipe. Jetting shines on grease in kitchen lines, soap and scale in older metal drains, sludge in long horizontal runs and the fine root hairs a cable leaves behind. Many jobs use both: cable first to open the line, then jet to scrub it clean. Before we jet, our drain tech checks the pipe condition, sometimes with a camera, and sets the pressure and nozzle to suit the line so the cleaning is thorough and controlled.

We review the history of the clog and, when useful, run a camera to check the pipe material and condition. Jetting suits most lines, but knowing the pipe first lets us set pressure correctly. You get an upfront quote before work starts.
If the line is fully blocked, we usually open it with a cable machine first. That gives the water a path to flow out and lets the jetting hose travel the full length of the line without pushing against a solid plug.
Our drain tech feeds the jetting hose through the cleanout and works it along the line in controlled passes. The nozzle scours grease, scale and sludge from the pipe wall and flushes the debris downstream toward the street sewer.
We run water through the fixtures to confirm strong flow. When a camera was used, we can run it again so you see the cleaned pipe on screen. We clean the work area and explain how to keep the line clear longer.
Hydro jetting is especially useful in New Jersey homes with older cast iron drain lines. Inside cast iron, decades of use leave a rough layer of scale and corrosion called tuberculation. That rough surface grabs grease and paper and narrows the pipe. A cable can cut a path through it, but a controlled jetting pass removes much more of the buildup across the whole wall. Because older pipe can be thin in spots, our drain techs check the line first and adjust pressure so we clean effectively without being reckless with aging pipe.
Grease is the other big reason New Jersey homeowners call for jetting. Larger households, home cooks who fry often and two family homes common in places like Hudson and Passaic counties can send a lot of fat down a single kitchen line. Over time that builds into a hard coating along long horizontal runs under the basement ceiling. Jetting clears it and keeps grease out of the wider sewer system, which regional systems such as the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission and the Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties depend on to keep wastewater moving.
The price depends on the length and diameter of the line, the type of buildup and how easy the line is to reach. A short kitchen branch costs less to jet than a long main line to the street. Thick grease or heavy scale may need more passes. If the line must be opened with a cable first, or if a camera inspection is added before and after, that adds steps. For most lines, yes, when it is done carefully. Our drain techs check the pipe material and condition first, sometimes with a camera, and adjust pressure and nozzle to suit the line. Very fragile or damaged sections may not be good candidates. If we see that, we explain it and recommend the safer cleaning method.
Jetting removes fine root hairs and flushes out root debris well. For thick, woody root masses, a cable machine with root cutting blades usually comes first, followed by jetting to clean what remains. Roots grow back over time, so lines with root intrusion benefit from scheduled cleaning.
Grease cools and sticks to pipe walls, building a thick coating that catches food and narrows the line. A cable punches a hole through it but leaves most of the coating behind. Jetting scours the full pipe wall and flushes the grease downstream, restoring the pipe opening and slowing the return of clogs.
No. The jetting hose goes into the line through a cleanout, and the water and debris flow downstream to the sewer, not back into the house. Our drain tech protects the area around the access point and cleans up when finished. If the cleanout is inside, we lay down covers first.
